Imagine if you could tell exactly what has changed in your project with a push of a button. That’s exactly what Assemble Systems allows you to do with their software, Assemble Systems Business Development Manager Fahim Dangra said. Instead of flipping through hundreds of sheets and trying to figure out what has changed by comparing a previous set of drawings to the new ones, you can just push a button. “I can just simply click a button and our software will tell me that there is 23,000 square feet of concrete added to this model,” Dangra said. “And then right away I can jump on it and determine if I need to write an RFI, make a change order, or maybe my sub is charging me too much.” Assemble Systems connects your 2D digital drawings to a 3D model and gives you the ability to see the same information in both drawing and model at the same time. The idea is to see as much information as possible. Assemble gives you all the inventory or the intelligence from the 3D models and 2D drawings in a grid view, said Mark Klusza, Assemble Systems Chief Innovation Officer. As you pick on these items, you have a 3D view and then the associated 2D view and it’s all tied together at the same time. As soon as you open the model in Assemble all the quantity information is right there. “Everything is cross-referenced in real time and it doesn’t matter what offering source it comes from,” Klusza said Assemble is also launching a new API called Assemble Connect. That allows you to reach into the Assemble project database and link it to other applications like Oracle and Sage. “And based on those queries you can live update and the table and properties will change based on that external data,” Klusza said. “We can integrate basically anything and bring it into your system.” And since it’s cloud-based it can be used anywhere there is an internet connection. “We have kept it so they don’t have to be a BIM expert,” Dangra said. “Anybody can just go in, open up our software, tap into the model and look at the information that they wanted to.” Assemble Systems, which was one of several sponsors at Procore’s annual conference, is able to integrate with Procore. The integration enables project teams to integrate BIM/VDC capabilities seamlessly into their project management workflows for improved project control.   HingePoint covers the AEC Industry and is the author of The AEC Industry 4.0 Report and the Autodesk Industry Report 2017. Matterport’s next-generation immersive media solution for construction and facility management documentation is eye catching. Matterport helps contractors, engineering firms, and architects document construction with a $3,600 camera to give you a 3D virtual tour. Matterport’s Pro Camera captures 2D photography and 3D data from job sites, and automatically stitches them into a complete, immersive 3D model. “You basically walk it around the job site. It spins for 45 seconds,” said Tomer Poran, business development manager at Matterport. “And uses infrared to map out 3D and take 3D images from its camera.” Matterport is an immersive media technology company that builds 3D media solutions that power industries from real estate to construction, and everywhere in between. Founded in 2011, Matterport is creating a complete virtual model of the world that changes the way individuals and industries interact with physical spaces. And it’s relatively fast. “Because this 3D data can be exported at relatively high accuracy we’re at about 99 percent accurate and mostly above that so you can build a pretty good as-built,” Poran said. “We’re talking about five hours after you are finished you have a fully stitched point cloud.” Matterport, which was one of several sponsors at Procore’s annual conference, is able to integrate with Procore. With Matterport and the Procore integration, users can look at the most updated documents or submittals, and anyone on the project team can now virtually step into the jobsite and walk around freely. Manufacturing Technology Adaptation & Automation in the Food Industry

You’ve probably seen Mrs. Renfro’s salsa label in big grocery stores across the nation, and you’ve probably unknowingly eaten some of the company’s barbecue sauce in restaurant chains. The story of Mrs. Renfro’s salsa is one of adaptation, nimbleness, growth, innovation, and ultimately automation. Mrs. Renfro’s brand shows that automation in manufacturing lets small businesses evolve, stay profitable and ultimately stay relevant against corporate giants. “We’re competing against the big guys. And we can because we are innovative and nimble,” said Doug Renfro, president of Renfro Foods, Inc. The company started 77 years ago in Fort Worth, Texas where the salsa was made in open kettles with boat oars because the Renfros could not afford pumps and agitators. “Now we have so many layers of technology. We have big giant machines that have little motherboards inside and you have to adjust it with a laptop,” Renfro said. “It makes you very efficient but you are more dependent on technology than in the old days.” The company is growing, and a lot of it has to do with technology. When Renfro was a child they could manufacture about 31 bottles a minute. Now they can create 141 bottles a minute. They manufacture about 60,000 jars a day. “We’ve rarely increased the number of employees we have; we’re able to get faster and more efficient,” Renfro said. “We’re doing seven times more business than we did 25 years ago, we do not have seven times more employees.”

However, automation and technology are not everything in a 77-year-old business. Renfro said technology coupled with the ability to outwork the bigger competition has helped the brand succeed. The Renfro brand has the ability to adapt and change more quickly. For example, they did not waste time launching Ghost Pepper Salsa. Within three years, the salsa went to their third best selling item in three years, which is unheard of.

“It’s so much more nimble of an environment,” Renfro said. “We’re so fast and nimble we can succeed quickly.”

Your design will begin “talking” to machines. Imagine everything is connected by the Internet and cloud. What this means is that a 3D BIM model can “talk” to a manufacturer’s machines. Design Building Wikis states, “Computers can produce files that translate design information into commands to operate machines, singularly or collectively, to perform preset sequences of tasks in the production of building components.” In theory, once information about the project is shared, the manufacturer’s machine can automatically start cutting or creating whatever is needed without human interaction. So a saw can be connected to the Internet and get instruction on what and how to cut materials based on your model.
The following functions can be used in computer-aided manufacturing:
  • Sawing
  • laser cutting
  • flame and plasma cutting
  • bending
  • gluing
  • routing
  • milling
“You’ll be able to have a factory in the cloud,” CEO and Founder of HingePoint Bryce Finnerty said. “That means your model will automatically talk to computers that are connected to machines and start making materials for your projects automatically.” Note: This article first appeared in our The AEC Industry 4.0 Report.

If not, then employees will be left behind with new technologies and faster ways to get from initiation of an idea to completion of a product. Automation is not only changing how products are delivered, but it is changing the necessary skills of employees and workers. “Manufacturing increasingly calls for brain work rather than metal-bashing,” The Economist stated in their special report on automation. Computer aided design made automation possible. But with computer aided manufacturing gaining momentum in today’s economy, the blue-collar worker is no longer as necessary. With today’s broad market, the ability to make quick decisions and get work finished faster is becoming more and more critical. However, CEO of HingePoint Bryce Finnerty said technology is not the only answer when wanting to move faster. “One thing we’ve seen is that if you don’t setup technology correctly or are using old versions of software in your company, it’s going to cause your employees to work more slowly than your competitors,” Finnerty said. “Companies are missing huge opportunities if they are not automating manual data entry or tasks that you must do in two or three separate systems because your software does not share information with other software.” HingePoint helps commercial real estate, construction and manufacturing companies build faster by creating custom enterprise software that takes control of company information. The number one driver for new software or systems is the ability to instantly see company information so executives and employees can make better and quicker decisions. “There is this craving out there to get control of company information,” Finnerty said. “There is so much, many don’t know how to access it or organize it and this is one of the first steps in working faster.” Brendan Desjardins, one of HingePoint’s leading project managers, said many manufacturers that work with HingePoint think all they need is a quick fix for something like SharePoint. “What they’re really after is a better way to collaborate with employees and to quickly find accurate information about their company,” Desjardins said. “They just need a partner to help them transition to something bigger and better.” HingePoint Byline: HingePoint 2300 McDermott Road STE 200-235, Plano, TX 75025 (214) 301-0000 www.hingepoint.com HingePoint covers the AEC Industry and is the author of The AEC Industry 4.0 Report and the Autodesk Industry Report 2017.
